Memory Pricing Guide |
Memory Prices - Week of August 28, 2006 - Page 2By Vangie Beal August 28, 2006SDRAMOverall SDRAM prices remain stable this week. Those interested in PC133 ECC 256-MB will save $2, while the price of both PC133 ECC 512-MB and PC133 CAS2 512-MB is up by a dollar. For the month of August, we've seen SDRAM prices remain very consistent, with only small price fluctuations in either direction. As we often see with DDR prices, changes are infrequent but one or two modules usually reflect a larger dollar value change. This week we have the usual assortment of price changes in the $1 and $2 range, as well as a $3 increase on PC3200 512-MB and a $4 increase on PC2700 512-MB, which is now selling for $44. The price of PC4000 512-MB jumped $11 to $127 this week, following a vendor change. DDR2 prices also reflect larger dollar value changes this week - unfortunately most are price increases. DDR2-533 256-MB is up $4 to $22 and DDR2-533 1-GB is now selling for $73, a $7 increase. The price of DDR2-800 512-MB decreased by $3 to $85 this week. Due to a vendor change, to one offering a lower price as well as free shipping, we have a nice $10 price drop on PC800 512-MB - now selling for $116. We have two more RDRAM modules, which fit into the $1 and $2 price drop range, but the price of PC800 ECC 256-MB went up $6 to $79 this week. There is no doubt that the $116 price tag on PC800 512MB is well worth a second look for consumers looking to purchase RDRAM this week. While most of August has brought only small price savings and increases, having to spend an extra $11 for PC4000 512-MB this week is quite a disappointment. Overall vendor wars are the main cause of the plentiful $1 and $2 price drops, as they vie for better positioning on comparison Web sites. Don't forget to keep an eye on your overall shipping costs and watch for online shipping deals, as this is a smart way to lower the overall price you end up paying for your system memory. Looking back from our initial prices at the start of August 2006, compared to today's chart, we do see some rather interesting monthly price changes. One of the biggest monthly shifts we noted was an overall price increase on PC4000 512-MB, which went up by $22 over the month (from $105 to $127). Those who waited until the end of August to purchase RDRAM (as opposed to the start of the month), will save a total of $5 on both PC800 512- MB and PC800 ECC 512-MB. Unfortunately, the overall price drops for August 2006 do not have as high a dollar value as the price increases.
We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:
Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated! Until next week - happy upgrading!
