Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of February 12, 2007 - Page 2

By Vangie Beal February 12, 2007

SDRAM

For the most part, SDRAM prices remain relatively unchanged this week. The only price movement in this category are two single dollar price drops on PC133 ECC 128-MB and PC133 ECC 256-MB, which counter the dollar increases on this memory from in our last price guide.

DDR / DDR2

DDR memory is also mostly stable this week, especially at the high-end, but we are seeing higher dollar value price drops than we did with SDRAM. PC2100 512-MB, PC3200 256-MB, and PC3200 1-GB modules are all down in price by $2 this week. PC2700 512-MB and PC3500 512-MB both dropped $3 to $43 and $75, respectively. The biggest savings this week comes in by way of a $5 price drop on PC3200 512-MB which is now selling for $38. Going up in price by a dollar is PC4200 256-MB, and we spotted a $3 increase on PC4000 1-GB.

DDR2 prices may not be as active, but these do show a bit more diversity than DDR. Here we see a few $1 price savings mixed in with a $4 price drop on DDR2-1000 1-GB. The price of DDR2-800 512-MB is up to $98, a difference of $10 over our last guide, however we should note that this price increases also came with a vendor change.

RDRAM

RDRAM prices show the most price changes overall, and these affect virtually all listings. PC800 128-MB offers a $2 savings and those looking for PC800 256-MB will pay $65 - a $5 savings. Both PC800 512-MB and PC800 ECC 512-MB are up in price by $3, to sit at $95 each. Other price increases include PC800 ECC 256MB, which gained $4 and currently sells at a price of $74.

Overall

Looking down the 'change' column this week shows a lot of activity, and for consumers looking to buy or upgrade memory this week, many of this activity is in your favor. RDRAM memory, like many PC800 varieties, offers an increased price, but the memory pricing trends result in an overall chart decrease. PC3200 512-MB is a good deal with its $5 price cut, and across the board, we also see a few modules down in price by $3. Not a huge savings, mind you but its better than the usual plethora of single dollar price drops we often find. Buyers would also do well to check with local franchise shops to see if they are willing to come close or price match Internet prices, as shipping costs won't need to be factored in.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.

Since we don't have a direct line to every vendor doing business online, so if you know of a company selling quality products at decent prices that isn't making our price guide, feel free to drop us a line with the vendors URL, so we can check them out as well! Feedback (of any kind) on the Weekly Memory Prices is always read and appreciated!

Until next week - happy upgrading!
