The dual-channel memory format is the standard for high-end performance systems, and is the de facto packaging for most DDR memory. The "matched pair" format has become very popular, as these DDR module kits are perfectly suited for the requirements of high-end dual-channel DDR operation, and are a much safer buy than purchasing one module now and hoping to match it up later. The most popular configurations are currently the 2x512-MB and 2x1-GB kits (although 2x2-GB are emerging) and with few exceptions, vendors offer the same basic speeds in matched pair DDR kits, as with their single module DDR.
The news is a bit better in the dual channel DDR chart, but not as good as expected. Matched pairs logically should show double the price drops of the single-module listings, but this week we managed a total chart decrease of only $135. Certainly, any kind of lower prices is good news, but there were only five price cuts that reached double digits, with the Corsair XMS PC3200 PRO 2x1-GB (-$24), Crucial Ballistix PC3200 2x512-MB (-$21) and OCZ PC3200 Platinum 2x1-GB (-$17) matched pairs showing the largest drops. Thankfully, we had limited activity on the other side, as only two dual channel kits increased at all, and a $5 jump to the price of pqi TURBO PC3200 2x1-GB was the largest.
