Memory Pricing Guide

Memory Prices - Week of December 31, 2007 - Page 2

By SharkyExtreme.com Staff January 1, 2008

SDRAM

The SDRAM/PC133 market was extremely stable over the past few weeks, and the vast majority of listings showed no price change. There were two exceptions, as PC133 CAS2 256MB jumped by $6 and PC133 CAS3 512MB showed a very attractive $19 price drop.

DDR / DDR2

There was some activity in the DDR section of the chart, and other than a $4 jump to the price of PC2100 512MB, the rest were all drops. PC2700 256MB, PC3200 256MB and PC3500 512MB all shed $1, while PC4000 512MB and PC4200 256MB showed more noticeable price cuts, falling by $7 and $9, respectively. The big news was a very nice $14 decrease to the price of PC4000 1GB.

The results were very similar in the DDR2 area, as there was also a $4 spike, this time to DDR2-1000 1GB, along with a few $1 price jumps. DDR2-1000 512MB and DDR2-667 1GB dropped by $4 and $5, respectively, and DDR2-800 1GB matched the DDR score with a $14 price cut of its own.

RDRAM

There is not much to say about the RDRAM portion of our memory guide, as we could not find a price change of any kind.

Overall

We may not be entering 2008 on a high note, but there are still enough price drops to give memory buyers a smile for the New Year. Obviously, the DDR and DDR2 listings showed the most significant price drops, but these are also the most popular segments, while SDRAM and RDRAM are more niche products. Those looking for an additional price break might want to contact local franchise shops to see if they are willing to come close to, or even match, Internet vendor prices - not only saving in shipping costs, but time as well.

Why are some Memory Prices LOWER than the prices listed?

We'd like to take this opportunity to assure you that SharkyExtreme has no affiliation with any vendor listed in our guide, but our memory price charts do take more than just the basic dollar amount into consideration. Here are just a few examples to highlight some of the many things we keep in mind when compiling a price guide - which may translate into the price you see in our guide being different than one you find:

  • If Company A offers memory five dollars cheaper than Company B, but Company A charges a higher shipping cost we'll use Company B's lower overall price for the guide.
  • Some vendors may list, for example, a very inexpensive price on 512-MB memory, yet if you dig deeper into the description you'll see this incredibly low price is for a kit (usually made up of 2x 256-MB modules).
  • Sometimes a price discrepancy is due to ECC and Non-ECC modules of the same memory type, with ECC normally being more expensive.
  • Some vendors will offer a low price that is only valid through a special order type. If the vendor says this price is good for MAIL or PHONE ORDERS only, we'll skip it and choose the next lowest listing.
  • We don't list prices on USED or REFURBISHED Memory. Some vendors don't state in the main areas of their site that these are used or refurbished modules. We avoid listing those.
