High-End Memory Prices - Week of December 22, 2008 - Page 3By SharkyExtreme.com Staff December 22, 2008In addition to the Athlon 64 FX Registered DDR platform, and the newer Intel XEON V8 and Skulltrail FB-DIMM configurations, there is a wide range of high-end workstation and small business servers that utilize these same memory formats. Since the desktop market utilizes 400 MHz PC3200 Registered DDR, that is where we concentrate our price listings, and even though Socket 940 is just a fond memory, these continue to be an upgrade option for many desktop users. Due to the influence of the XEON V8/Skulltrail plaforms, we continue to add FB-DIMM listings in the 1GB, 2x1GB and 2x2GB memory configurations. The lower number of available Registered/FB-DIMM modules also means we've gone a bit outside the top tier manufacturers. This week was a very active one for the Registered DDR/FB-DIMM DDR2 listings, and we found a lot of significant price changes, with all of these registering in the consumer's favor. To start, the Crucial PC2-5300 FB-DIMM 2x4GB kit received a massive $125 price drop, and there were five other listings that hit double digits, including $57 off the price of a Crucial PC2-5300 FB-DIMM 4GB module. Only a single chart entry showed any kind of price increase, and that was only a $3 spike to the Corsair PC2-5300 FB-DIMM 2GB module. The overall chart numbers obviously fell, and resulted in a total drop of $297 for the period.
