Weekly Memory Prices - Week of Dec 16, 2001 - Page 2By Vangie Beal December 18, 2001
Again, this week, we see a few SDRAM price decreases being overshadowed by yet more price increases. In listing the increases, I must admit to darn near falling out of my chair when I saw that PC 133 CAS3 256mb memory more than double in price this week, going up to $32.00 from $15 last week. With that sad news having been said, we can move on to the good news in SDRAM prices this week. PC 133 CAS2 512mb went down in price $13 to $64.00. Short of those two big ups and downs, howevers, we see a few + and - ($1 to $3) price changes. As many of you probably noticed, we finally did a bit of "guide updating" and tossed out the PC1600 listings, replacing them with what many readers have been asking for: PC2400 prices. Obviously, we won't be recording price changes until next week, when we have something to compare the prices with. In the PC2100 category, however, prices remain steady. We only see a single price change, in fact; and that was a $1 drop on PC2100 512mb, which now sits at $107.00. RDRAM has pretty much stayed on track, with only slight price changes, this week, with the exception of PC 800 512mb and PC800 ECC 512mb. Both of these dropped by $18 bringing the prices down to $265.00. PC800 ECC 256mb was our only price increase; and it went up $2 to $84.00. I guess we can all hope the slightly increased prices we see this week are due to vendors wanting to "cash in" on some consumers' Christmas dollars. But unfortunately, that would probably be too optimistic. Let's all hope Santa stocked up on memory, last October, when the prices hit rock bottom, as it looks like it may be quite some time before we see those super-low prices again.
