Memory Pricing Guide |
Weekly Memory Prices - Week of Jan 20, 2002 - Page 2By Vangie Beal January 24, 2002
"Up and down" certainly describes January's memory prices so far. Today, we see all but three of the SDRAM modules we list in our guide go down in price, unlike last week where everything went up. The price drops this week are, for the most part, rather small $1 to $3 drops; but I guess anything is better than massive price increases. Among those still on the rise, however, PC133 ECC 512MB went up another $20 bringing it to the final price of $125.00. PC133 CAS3 256MB also rose $13 to $53.00 this week. For price drops, we see that both PC 133 CAS3 and CAS2 512MB went down by $45 to $66.00 each. Now that is certainly a nice drop on higher-end memory, seeing as how they only went up $24 and $38 each last week. DDR SDRAM is usually the category that charts fewer and smaller changes, and this week is no exception. We see no changes on the price of any DIMMs we track in our guide. With such big price increases as of late, I'd have to say that in this case, "no change" is probably a good thing however. For quite some time PC800 buyers have been able to choose between 512MB and ECC 512MB and not have to pay more than a couple dollars for the extra error-checking capabilities of the ECC memory. This week, however, our price guide has really painted a bright line between these two RIMMs. PC800 went down $64.00 to $185.00, while PC800 ECC 512MB only dropped $1 to $248.00. Both of these RIMMs were at $249 last week. After last week's many SDRAM price increases, it is so nice to see them drop back down a bit. Memory prices, right now, are fluctuating quickly and frequently, and its anybody's guess if it will mean consumers saving a few dollars or shelling out a bit more between one week and the next. Do yourselves a favor and check prices again before deciding whether or not to buy, as prices have been changing (usually increasing) so quickly that most of this guide is unlikely to remain accurate for a day, let alone a week. We can all hope for some better prices on memory for consumers next week... but unfortunately, I wouldn't count on it!
