January Video Card Price Guide - Page 2By SharkyExtreme.com Staff January 5, 2005The NVIDIA-based video card market is a bit more splintered than the ATI one, and we still have the GeForce FX and GeForce4 cards available at street level, and really competing at the entry-level and mainstream sectors. Naturally, the GeForce FX and GeForce Series 6 lines receive a greater number of listings, and especially as we move to the very popular GeForce FX 5700/5900/5950 Ultra and GeForce 6800 levels. NVIDIA gets the same overall coverage as the ATI list, starting at the GeForce4 MX440-8X and ending with the GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB cards. But just like ATI, there are some NVIDIA cards that are becoming increasingly hard to locate, and we've adjusted our list accordingly. In a surprise move, the NVIDIA chart surpassed the ATI camp in terms of both overall price movement and individual cuts. ATI has been the hub of activity over the past few months, with NVIDIA either barely keeping pace or falling back considerably, and it's nice to see activity at virtually all market segments. We find some smaller price breaks at the NVIDIA entry-level, with the sub-$100 GeForce PCX 5300 128MB and GeForce FX 5500 256MB dropping even lower. The mid-range is all about the GeForce 6600 and 6600GT boards, as GeForce 6600 128MB (PCIe) models dipped by up to $10 and AGP versions of the GeForce 6600 GT 128MB decreasing by as much as $32. In contrast, the PCI Express GeForce 6600 GT cards were stable this month, and we expect the cost of AGP variants to continue to drop, until there is some form of price parity. As usual, the NVIDIA high-end is where the larger price cuts took place, and GeForce 6800 256MB (PCIe) received a hefty $49 cut, while the eVGA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB wasn't far behind with a $35 drop. * Please note that many of the GeForce 6800-based video cards are still in short supply (especially the PCIe ones), with some models on back-order, or even on pre-order and waiting for the individual vendor release.
