Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the lowest $/GB models rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on what brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The "sweet spot" for Serial ATA hard drives is obviously a bit different than it was in our PATA examination, and here we find the 250GB models sitting right at the top of the list. In fact, these hold down the top 3 positions, but are closely followed by a few 200GB and 250GB drives. The 160GB price per GB totals don't have the same effect as in the PATA charts, and it's a better deal to jump straight to 200GB when buying a SATA performance drive. There is little surprise which models would be bringing up the rear, as the Western Digital 10K Raptors are certainly very fast, but at only 36.7GB and 74GB capacities, the $/GB rating is still extremely high.
