Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on what brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The "sweet spot" for the Serial ATA hard drives is a bit different than we saw on the PATA side, and in this area, it's 250GB or bust. The 250GB models hold down the top 3 positions and 4 of the top 5, and leaves no doubt as to where SATA buyers should be looking right now. Many of the 160GB to 200GB models do not have the same value as the corresponding PATA drive, and it's best to look at nabbing at least a 200GB SATA drive, and preferably a 250GB one. The 40GB and 80GB SATA drives are languishing at the bottom of the list, but the final spots are reserved for the incredibly fast, but low capacity, Western Digital 36.7GB and 74GB 10K Raptor drives.
