Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on what brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The SATA value chart has not changed a great deal over the last month, and actually showcased the trends that are only now emerging in the PATA market. The "sweet spot" remains a bit higher for SATA hard drives, with 250GB being the starting point, with no 160GB or 200GB drives entering the top 5 list, and only a few in the top 10. The bottom of the chart is hardly a surprise, as the incredibly fast, but low capacity, Western Digital 36.7GB and 74GB 10K Raptor drives have notoriously poor $/GB ratings. And as with the PATA selection, those on a budget should look at moving to the 120GB to 160GB range, just to maximize the value at bit.
