Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on what brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The SATA value chart is quite similar to the PATA list, but there is definitely a 250GB trend going on here. In fact, five of the top six entries are 250GB models, with the Western Digital 320GB posting the best $/GB rating, just as its Parallel ATA counterpart did in the previous chart. And as in the PATA listing, we also find the 80GB SATA drives down at the bottom of the chart, although the bottom two rungs are reserved for the incredibly fast, but low capacity, Western Digital 36.7GB and 74GB 10K Raptor drives. SATA hard drive buyers should look at the 160GB range to start, as this provides the best overall value, while remaining below the $100 mark.
