Our definition of mainstream video cards encompasses the $100-$199 price range, and is really where you'll get the most bang for your buck. This is where you will find the latest mainstream video cards, like the Radeon X700 Pro and GeForce 6600 and 6600GT, along with a few higher-end products that have been replaced at the top of the food chain, and have then dropped in price.
The mainstream video card list is usually where we see a few noticeable price drops mixed in with some high-end cards dropping below the $200 mark and entering the mainstream market. This scenario did unfold, but it really only affected a couple of GeForce 6800 128MB cards, both of which fell by over $50 and now rest in the $163-$167 range. This really presents a difficult choice at the mainstream, as these lower-priced GeForce 6800 cards can give the GeForce 6600GT 128MB a run in the AGP arena, especially if overclocking is in the cards. Even so, we're sticking the GeForce 6600GT 128MB boards for both AGP and PCIe systems, while the GeForce 6800 and Radeon X800 128MB cards are both intriguing possibilities.
