Parallel and Serial ATA Hard Drives: Price Changes

The following chart takes all of the tracked PATA and SATA hard drives, and incorporates these into one monster price list, which is then sorted by the monthly price change. This gives us a slightly different view than in previous hard drive price lists, as it identifies the month's biggest movers and shakers, and can really help identify the areas to take advantage of. When used with the other price charts, this list can add another dimension to the monthly prices, but keep in mind that the largest cuts may not always translate into the best overall deal. We have also gotten rid of the $/GB column and replaced it with a SATA/PATA section to ensure there is no confusion about the interface of any drive models.

The overall price change list highlights the individual price cuts and spikes, as well as offering a direct comparison between the PATA and SATA hard drives. July gave a decided advantage to the Serial ATA market, as SATA drives held down six of the top ten price cuts, and other than the $111 drop to the Samsung T133 400GB PATA drive, it was an SATA cakewalk. The overall price drops also favored the larger capacity drives, with the vast majority of the more significant cuts affecting the 400GB to 750GB range. Only the 150GB Western Digital Raptor X bucked this trend, but this is still a high-end model in its own right. Overall price increases showed some very good news, with a maximum price increase of $10 and only two drives hitting that level.
