September Video Card Price Guide - Page 4By SharkyExtreme.com Staff September 27, 2006Our definition of mainstream video cards encompasses the $100-$199 price range, and is really where you'll get the most bang for your buck. This is where you will find the latest mainstream video cards, like the Radeon X1600 Pro/XT, Radeon X800 GTO, Radeon X180 GTO, and GeForce 6600 GT, 6800 GS & 7600 GT, along with a few higher-end products that have been replaced at the top of the food chain (like the Radeon X800/X850), and have then dropped in price. The mainstream video card list is usually where we see a few noticeable price drops mixed in with some high-end cards dropping below the $200 mark and entering the mainstream market. September showed a lot of new mainstream card entrants, but this is slightly deceiving, as the majority of these were brand new models like the Radeon X1650 Pro, GeForce 7600 GS, and GeForce 7900 GS cards. In fact, the only mainstream card to pay a visit from the high-end chart was the Radeon X850 Pro 256MB, a beneficiary of an $84 price drop this month. Otherwise, it was a stable month in this price range, and the real news was the debut of new ATI and NVIDIA mainstream challengers. On the ATI side, the GeForce 7900 GS 256MB and X1800 GTO 256MB cards are hot performance options, while the GeForce 7600 GT 256MB provides a lot of value at the $150 price range. ATI buyers might also be interested in the $205 Radeon X1900 GT 256MB, which is inching ever closer to the mainstream chart.
