March Hard Drive Price Guide - Page 3By SharkyExtreme.com Staff March 28, 2007The following chart takes a slightly different angle on Parallel ATA hard drive prices, and attempts to discern overall value using a price per GB figure, and then sorting by it. This chart pushes the lowest $/GB rating to the top, and uses a tried-and-true method of illustrating where the best overall values may exist, Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which hard drive brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck. The Parallel ATA market follows the standard trends, with the majority of the top drive values continue to reside in the 250GB to 320GB range, and accounting for seven of the top ten drive values. The higher-capacity 400GB and 500GB drives continue their way up the list, and take the other three positions, the highest being a fifth place finish for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB. The top value came out of nowhere this month, and riding a big $38 price drop, the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB checks in at an astounding 24-cents/GB. Other top values include the Samsung SpinPoint 250GB and Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB both at 27-cents/GB, while the Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB is not far back at 28-cents/GB. At the other end of the scale, we find the usual selection of 80GB to 120GB hard drives sitting at the bottom of the value ratings.
