Parallel ATA Hard Drive Value

The following chart takes a slightly different angle on Parallel ATA hard drive prices, and attempts to discern overall value using a price per GB figure, and then sorting by it. This chart pushes the lowest $/GB rating to the top, and uses a tried-and-true method of illustrating where the best overall values may exist, Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which hard drive brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.

The Parallel ATA drive chart is suddenly awash with value, and compares extremely well against the Serial ATA competition. The Western Digital Caviar SE 500GB was the value champ in June and it repeats again in July, sitting at 21-cents/GB, shaving a cent off its June rating. The Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB isn't far back at 22-cents/GB, but the most impressive change has been the addition of a trio of Hitachi Deskstar 320GB, 400GB and 500GB drives that all sit in the 23-cents/GB range. The overall trend continues to shift towards higher-capacity models, and the 400GB-500GB takeover is almost complete. This month, seven of the top ten drive values are from this range, including the entire top five.
