December Hard Drive Price Guide - Page 4By SharkyExtreme.com Staff January 1, 2008Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck. The Serial ATA value chart does follow the same basic trends we found in the PATA market, but there is definitely a shift towards slightly higher capacity models. The standard 400GB to 500GB drive range is still the most popular, accounting for seven out of the top ten SATA drive values, but it's the remaining drives that show the difference. Also included in the top ten are a single 320GB drive and a pair of 750GB behemoths - the latter at value ratings their PATA counterparts cannot touch. The top individual drive value is the Western Digital Caviar SE 500GB at 20-cents per GB, but it barely held off the Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB and Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB drives, both rated at 21-cents/GB.
