February 2008 Hard Drive Price Guide - Page 3By SharkyExtreme.com Staff February 27, 2008The following chart takes a slightly different angle on Parallel ATA hard drive prices, and attempts to discern overall value using a price per GB figure, and then sorting by it. This chart pushes the lowest $/GB rating to the top, and uses a tried-and-true method of illustrating where the best overall values may exist, Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which hard drive brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck. The Parallel ATA value chart continues to shift, and while prior months showed the highest concentration of 400GB to 500GB drives, February is more open. Four hard drives do hit this range, including the three top-rated models, but there are also four others at the 250GB-320GB level, as well as a pair of 750GB behemoths. In terms of individual deals, the Western Digital Caviar SE 500GB (20-cents/GB) repeats again as our top-rated value, while the Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB takes second place at a 21-cents/GB rating. A pair of Seagate drives hold down third and fourth place, as the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 RK 750GB check in at 23-cents/GB and 24-cents/GB, respectively.
