December Hard Drive + SSD Price Guide - Page 3By SharkyExtreme.com Staff January 1, 2009Standard PATA and SATA hard drives still make up the vast majority of desktop PC, or even notebook, configurations, but demand for Solid State Drive (SSD) technology is growing by leaps and bounds. SSD drives replace conventional hard drive platters, motors and read heads with flash memory, lowering noise, heat and power requirements, while offering significant performance gains. These SSD drives also represent a popular upgrade for existing notebooks, and even high-end desktop users are migrating to this technology as their primary boot/OS drive. Due to this increased demand and a significant rise in SSD visibility with online retailers, this is an emerging market that deserves coverage. In this section, we are covering 2.5" SATA SSDs, although 3.5" models will be forthcoming. Sold-state drives continue to drop in price, and many of these models have come down significantly over the three months we've been covering them. Another three of our SSD list fell by triple-digits, and these hit the Intel X25-M 80GB (-$127), SuperTalent MasterDrive OX 128GB (-$111) and Crucial 64GB (-$102) drives. In total, there were twelve price cuts of $10 or higher, and another two of these reached -$90+ and almost hit triple-digits. There was virtually no activity on the other end of the chart, and two $32-$35 OCZ price jumps were the only ones higher than $5. Naturally, this led to another great week for SSD prices, as the chart showed an aggregate drop of $765.
