Serial ATA Hard Drive Value

Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.

The top-rated drives in our Serial ATA value chart skew towards the larger models, and 750GB and 1TB capacities are the most prevalent, with a few 640GB and 1.5TB drives tossed in for good measure. The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB takes the value lead with a rating of under 9-cents/GB, and the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B 1TB just misses out on the top spot by a few decimal places. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 750GB is firmly in third place at just over 9-cents/GB, and there is a selection of SATA hard drives in the 10-11-cent/GB range. As usual, the Western Digital Raptor and VelociRaptor drives sit at the bottom of the list, but that's the price you pay for 10K-RPM performance.
