- Try and make sure that your PC's case has a good flow of air and doesn't get 'stuffy'. If it does add a fan to attempt to blow the hot air out caused by all the PC's components.
- If you can use a bit of 'DIY' (do it yourself) engineering and mount a Video Card-sized fan (we originally used a Pentium Pro cooling fan just for good measure) over the chip itself. Do the same for the memory if you must. But make sure you're being sensible and actually helping to cool the Voodoo3 and not actually blowing hot air back over it. For example try giving it some room and leave the 1st two PCI slots next to the AGP slots EMPTY. If you have a third and fourth PCI slot then plug your PCI based cards in there.
- If you start getting ANY lock ups whatsoever then just stop. This means the memory and/or chip is over heating. At a later date we'll let you know which memory vendors have a greater success rate when overclocking.
- Use a freeze-spray (you can find cans in your local hardware store) it really does keep your chip cooler! Apply it as frequently as needed. Touch the chip with your finger (otherwise known as the Sharky Extreme manual heat probe) and if your skin peels away it's time to apply some more spray. Obviously if this is the only way to get your board to run, then you're not going to have much success. On a serious note, it's certainly worth trying as a 'precautionary' measure.
- If you're happy with your Voodoo3s performance and don't need to squeeze an extra inch (fps rather) of performance then don't 'fix' what isn't broke. Overclocking your Voodoo3 is certainly NOT recommended by 3dfx and doing so voids your warranty. You'll also shorten the life span of your Voodoo3 but since we're living on a six-month cycle…
- Where games are fill-rate limited the higher memory bandwidth provides some benefits in terms of fps. Just don't expect all your games to benefit though.
- Some marketing folks will tell you that overclocking an already fast 3D card can be caused by an end-user spending too much time at 'tweaking conventions' or due to some end users having to supplement the size of genitalia. If you're happy with your genitalia and/or don't spend time at 'Tweaking Conventions' then don't bother overclocking. On the other hand we're all happy with the proportions of our private parts and do indeed spend too much time at 'Tweaking Conventions'. Hence we do believe in overclocking video cards…
