The Voodoo5 5500 uses two VSA-100 processors to increase performance. The Voodoo4 will use one processor. The Voodoo5 6000 will use four processors. Quantum3D will release their AAlchemy series of visual simulation hardware, which will use up to 32 VSA-100 processors.
- 1x/2x/4x AGP with full sideband support
The Voodoo5 supports AGP, but it does not support AGP fast writes or texturing.
- 32-bit rendering
- 32-bit textures
- Up to 24-bit floating point depth buffer (Z and W)
- 8-bit stencil buffer
For the first time, 3dfx has designed a 32-bit 3D card with the Voodoo5. While other makers are on their second or third generation of 32-bit cards, 3dfx has just started. The quality of the Voodoo5 5500 AGP's 32-bit color is good but it's hard for us to get excited about a feature that was standard for every other card last year.
- 2048x2048 maximum texture size
- DXTC and proprietary texture compression
The 2048x2048 texture size also brings the Voodoo5 up to the level of the competition. Compression support lets the Voodoo5 use less memory bandwidth and memory space as well as larger textures in the same amount of space. DXTC is DirectX's texture compression system. FXT1 is 3dfx's open sourced compression system.
- [-4k,4l] rendering coordinate range
- Fully software-compatible with 3dfx Voodoo3
