While it is hard to go wrong with any of the new UDMA/66 drives on the market, there are a few things that can set a drive apart from its competitors. Quantum, long an industry leader, seems to have spent more time on making its spec sheet look impressive and less on fine tuning actual performance and the end result is that Fujitsu has shown up an industry leader and staked its own claim in the hard drive market. While UDMA/66 controllers become more common on the average desktop, we may see Fujitsu gain in popularity very quickly and become an industry leader in its own right. But you may want to hurry.
With hard drive prices at an all time low and technology growing at an alarming rate, it is only a matter of time before we see the same thing we recently saw in the RAM industry. Prices can't be this low for long and we have already seen many of these companies announce layoffs in the past few months. It may not be long before prices jump towards $20 / Gigabyte. So as the new UDMA/66 standard emerges and while drive prices are low, it may be time to seriously consider a purchase. The winner of this face off, the Fujitsu MPD3182-AH, while not well known, is certainly a leader of its class.
- 5% UDMA/66 Speed advantage
- Low Noise
- Low Heat Dissipation
- History in the market
- Industry leading access times
- Slightly larger formatted capacity
