ATI's latest addition to the RADEON line is definitely a mixed bag. On one hand, it boasts the same GPU as the DDR variations (unlike the GeForce2 MX, which actually uses a different chip) plus offers the same excellent video quality and 2D/3D clarity. On the other hand, it weighs in with the same price as the 32MB DDR card after rebate, at $150.
Performance between the SDR RADEON and the GeForce2 MX is, in most cases, fairly well matched. At the same time, the RADEON costs a bit more, making it a bit less attractive. While we may see quite a few of these cards in OEM-built systems, there will likely be few floating around on the retail channel. If you have the hankering for the RADEON feature set and multimedia performance, you cannot go wrong with the 32MB DDR card for the exact same price (until the rebate expires, anyway).
- Average high resolution, 32-bit color performance
- Industry leading video acceleration
- Price/Performance ratio isn't as good as the 32MB DDR RADEON
- Driver work to be done for Windows 2000
