  • Samsung was showing off an absolutely gorgeous 24" LCD screen. It was the first screen we've seen that actually looked better than the 22" Apple Cinema Display. The contrast, brightness, color and viewing angle were all excellent. A Matrox G400 drove the screen at 1920x1280. Unfortunately, the screen is not yet shipping to the public. It will likely be another six months before that happens, and you can expect it from companies other than Samsung. Samsung makes the LCD but usually sells it to other companies who integrate the other electronics and packaging. According to a Samsung spokesman, when it does ship, it should go for about $6000. That's a lot of money but this high-resolution screen is just amazing.

Another LCD technology on display came from Colorado MicroDisplay Inc.. CMD's .47" CMD8X6D microdisplay uses Dynamic Nematic Liquid Crystal on Silicon technology to display 800x600 video in 18-bit color. CMD had a headset from Olympus on display that mounted a monocular CMD display to give large-screen visuals to the headset. The image was actually quite good looking and didn't cause nearly the eyestrain as the last Sony headset we tried.
