Sharky Extreme :

The following is a detailed breakdown of the systems Intel is planning for each segment of their server processor and chipset market. All system prices are without a monitor.

High End (8+ CPU)
Price Range: >$50K
CPU Clock; Bus Speed/Cache Size; Motherboard Chipset by Quarter:

  • Q1 2000: Pentium III Xeon 550MHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset

  • Q2 2000: Early Introduction Pentium III Xeon 800MHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset
Mid way phase out Pentium III Xeon 550MHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset

  • Q3 2000: Pentium III Xeon 800MHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset
    Early Introduction Itanium 733MHz; 2.1GBps FSB/4M; i870 chipset

  • Q4 2000: Early Introduction Itanium 800MHz; 2.1GBps FSB/4M; i870 chipset
    Itanium 733MHz; 2.1GBps FSB/4M; i870 chipset
Early Introduction Pentium III Xeon 9xxMHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset
Phase out Pentium III Xeon 800MHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset

  • Q1 2001: Itanium 800MHz; 2.1GBps FSB/4M; i870 chipset
    Early Introduction Foster 1.4GHz; Full Speed/256K L2, 1M Integrated L3; i870 chipset
Early Phase Out Pentium III Xeon 9xxMHz; 100MHz/2M; Profusion chipset

  • Q2 2001: Itanium 800MHz; 2.1GBps FSB/4M; i870 chipset
    Foster 1.4GHz; Full Speed/256K L2, 1M IL3; i870 chipset

  • 2H 2001: Introduction McKinley
    Foster 1.4GHz; Full Speed/256K L2, 1M IL3; i870 chipset

Notice that, while the Xeon has a lower clock speed than current consumer Pentium IIIs, it has a significantly larger cache (as well as a larger price).
