SE: You worked at 3dfx for quite some time and indeed dealt with them as well as NVIDIA when you were with STB. What is your opinion on the rise and fall of 3dfx? Let it all out now...
Brian Burke: They did some great things for the industry. They were a pioneer in 3D graphics. To bad it had to come to this.
SE: What 3D card do you use at home now then? Do you turn FSAA on or off?
Brian Burke: The computer I am using right now is a laptop. I can't wait for Geforce2 Go. My desktop system has a Geforce2 Pro. I turn on AA when I play Driver and NFS. I gave my old 3dfx card to my son for his PC. And no, FSAA does not do a lot for Tonka Joe's Workshop or Max and the Haunted Castle.
SE: Is the Voodoo5 slow?
Brian Burke: The Voodoo5 was late. Not slow, just slower. ;)
SE: When you were at 3dfx, you used to rave (now I am being diplomatic here) about FSAA. Admittedly the Sharky Extreme folks aren't really flyboys so we didn't really see the argument for having it at 30fps at 640x480. We preferred the other route, faster frame rates and higher resolutions. What do you think now that you're free at last?
Brian Burke: I think it depends on what you are doing. It makes a big difference in racing games. But for UT or Q3, I go with frame rates. The higher the resolution, the less of an impact FSAA makes.
SE: What are your current favorite and/or forthcoming features (other than FSAA of course) that NVIDIA cards present and future do for 3D games?
Brian Burke: Other than FSAA, I love the fast frame rates. ;) On the future, have you seen the DX 8 spec? Lots of exciting features are in DX 8 that will be great when they make it in to hardware. For example, in NV20 NVIDIA will have hardware support for... oh wait my cell phone is ringing, hold on...
Ok I am back, now what was I saying. Oh well, probably wasn't important. Let's move on...
SE: This is the part where you tell us all about NV55 or about your summer holidays. I for one would prefer to hear about NV20 but I know most of our readers want to know what you did this summer so answer that part...
Brian Burke: Well, this summer I took a long weekend and went to the BrickYard 400 NASCAR race with my best friend and my Dad (both have a full set of teeth, BTW). Then we took my son to DisneyWorld for his fourth birthday on the family gig.
SE: Cheers as always Brian, and all the best of luck with your new job.
Brian Burke: Thanks.
