As we mentioned in our article yesterday on the Slot-1 Celeron(tm) 366 CPU, buyers need to be aware that the Slot-1 versions of the new Celeron(tm) chips won't last forever. Intel(r) has made it clear that the Celeron(tm) will be moving to the new PPGA (Plastic Pin Grid Array) Socket370 format as soon as mainboard vendors are shipping enough of the new boards to make the switch.

The phrase "get 'em while they're hot" comes to mind, but the truth is that the phasing out probably won't begin until 2H/99…Plenty of time to grab one of the new Slot-1 Celeron(tm) screamers and drop it into your systems.

The two 400MHz Celeron(tm) flagships that we tested for this article bear they product code of SL37V, mfg. in Malaysia. They're both reatil boxed versions of the Celeron(tm) 400, and should not be confused with the OEM variant of the same CPU.

Both of our 400s were manufactured in the 51st week of 1998, which makes them a little bit older than what you'd be able to purchase if you throw some scratch at one next week. Whether or not it would make any difference in the overclocking results below is questionable, as the Deschutes core that the Celeron(tm) 400 is based on is pretty dialed in since Intel(r)'s been manufacturing it for almost a year now.
