    Intel Pentium 4-3.06 GHz Review
    By Vince Freeman :  November 14, 2002

    Performance

Our performance comparisons include a wide variety of Intel and AMD processors, including the reviewed Pentium 4-3.06 GHz processor, along with the Pentium 4-2.8 and 2.53 GHz. The AMD contingent is made up of the Athlon XP 2700+, 2600+ and 2200+. Our main performance Intel platform is an i850E motherboard, powered by PC1066 RDRAM memory, while i845PE DDR333 scores are also present. The choice of platform is important, as the Intel chipsets feature full support for Hyper-Threading Technology and make the best possible reference test base.

The standard memory configuration is 512-MB (Kingston PC1066 RDRAM or Crucial PC2700 DDR) and all memory timings have been set to maximum (CAS2, etc.). The PC1066 is run at full 1066 MHz speeds, while the PC2700 DDR is run at 333 MHz. Our video component is the cream of the crop Radeon 9700 Pro (using Catalyst 2.3 drivers), which helps gives these high-end processors the headroom necessary for system and 3D game benchmarking.

Windows XP Pro is once again our choice for the operating system, and this is especially integral given that HT is only supported in the Windows XP Pro and Home software. Our benchmark suite is a bit different this time, and due to our inability to receive the newest ZD Winstone HT-enabled tests (which only appeared on November 5), we are foregoing examination of the application benchmark side. We hope to have the updated software soon, and to update the benchmarks afterwards.

Our current benchmark selection includes our standard SiSoft SANDRA 2002 and PCMark 2002 testing for the sub-system results, along with popular 3D game tests like Unreal Tournament 2003, 3DMark 2001SE, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake 3, Serious Sam 2, and Comanche 4. We experienced difficulty getting Jedi Knight II multi-player mode to run properly with Hyper-Threading enabled, so this benchmark has not been included. Our default game benchmark setting is 1024x768x32, which is standard resolution used by the vast majority of gamers.
