AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton Review
    By Vince Freeman :  May 13, 2003

    Jedi Knight II

Jedi Knight is the newest Quake 3-based game and many would say it is the most resource hungry. We've updated to version 1.04 and can now provide problem-free Intel HyperThreading results in this demanding benchmark. In this particular instance, the systems have been tested using standard High Quality detail settings, and the resolution has been increased to 1024x768.

Jedi Knight II gets us back to the basic thread, where the Athlon XP 3200+ really takes it to the 533 MHz Pentium 4 processors, while not having quite enough juice to overtake the 800 MHz Pentium 4-3.0C. Once again, the shift to a 400 MHz FSB has its benefits, and the Athlon XP 3200+ moves well in front of the Athlon XP 3000+.

    Unreal Tournament 2003 Performance

Unreal Tournament 2003 includes a benchmark program that automatically tests two separate modes. One is Flyby, which takes a canned tour of the UT game world and then offers up a framerate score and really hammers both the CPU and video card. The second is Botmatch, and this is a more game-oriented test than Flyby, and is a far more CPU-oriented test. In this section, weve tested UT 2003 at 1024x768 x 32-bit.

When it comes to determining if a trend is solid or not, Unreal Tournament 2003 is an excellent litmus test. As the Flyby benchmark chart shows, the Athlon XP 3200+ once again outpaces the Pentium 4-3.06 GHz, and comes tantalizingly close to the score posted by the Pentium 4-3.0C. UT 2003 is one of the newer and most demanding benchmarks we use, and these results show the same basic trends as the other game tests.

In a repeat performance, the UT 2003 Botmatch benchmarking shows the same basic trend, and clocks the Athlon XP 3200+ right between the Pentium 4-3.0C and 3.06 GHz. The Athlon XP 3200+ also shows a nice framerate increase compared to the Athlon XP 3000+ and 2700+.
