AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Processor Review
    By Vince Freeman :  January 6, 2004

    PCMark 2004 Pro Performance

PCMark 2004 Pro is a much-needed upgrade to the standard 2002 version, and along with adapting to the ever-changing hardware world, FutureMark has also added some new tests. The PCMark 2004 design still cuts a line between purely synthetic and application-based benchmarks, and provides a more general view of computer performance. PCMark 2004 performs general use tasks such as image compression, grammar check, and audio conversion, while combining this with a selection of similar benchmarks for individual system components. As we're dealing with processors and subsystem performance, the main tests we'll be looking at are the System, CPU and Memory results.

The PCMark 2004 System benchmark scores show the system rankings a bit differently, with the Pentium 4 competitors surpassing both the Athlon 64 3400+ and Athlon 64 FX-51. PCMark 2004 does contain some multi-threaded tests, so this is likely to give an added performance boost to Intel HT processors, along with rewarding their higher core speed. Even so, the Athlon 64 3400+ does quite well, and provides a nice performance increase compared to previous Athlon XP designs.

The PCMark Pro 2004 CPU benchmark scores are about where we expected them, and as mentioned above, the presence of some multi-threaded tests give the Pentium 4 HT processors a chance to strut their stuff. The Athlon 64 3400+ almost matches the Athlon 64 FX-51 in this test, and really shows how close these two are in overall CPU performance.

The Memory benchmarking shows the same overall trend as SANDRA 2004, and the PCMark 2004 results show the Athlon 64 3400+ putting up a great score for a single-channel DDR architecture. The Pentium 4 platforms score higher, and as expected, the integrated, dual-channel DDR controller of the Athlon 64 FX-51 takes home the overall title.
