  • To kick things off, let's take a look at NVIDIA's GeForce2 Ultra and its predecessors with the old Detonator 2 and new Detonator 3 drivers in OpenGL.

    Still at the top of our list for benchmarking OpenGL applications, Quake III Arena offers fantastic visuals and fast-paced gameplay. For our first run of benchmarks we tested the cards using “Normal” (default settings) quality settings at various resolutions. Although Normal quality won't strain the limitations of the GeForce2, we still get an idea of what performance can be had with an average of speed and quality.

    The Normal setting doesn't really tax any of the GeForce family until you hit the 1024x768 level, where the GeForce 256 reaches its fill rate ceiling. Only at 1280x1024 does the gap between the GeForce2 GTS and the Ultra become apparent. The Ultra scores 115.9 in comparison to the GTS that scores 96.8 when using the Detonator 3 drivers. Where the higher fill rate really matters is at 1600x1200. This is where the Ultra shines. A score card of 91.2 for the Ultra vs. 68.1 for the GTS reads pretty well for the 1600x1200-hungry gamers out there.
