For the future, Ultra3SCSI with its 160MB/sec transfer rate is nearing its introduction, expect to see a few high-end drives supporting this standard at Comdex. For the mere mortals clinging to non-SCSI solutions, help is on the way in the form of UltraDMA/66, a standard that promises to double the current UltraDMA/33's peak capacity of 33MB/sec to 66MB/sec. So far, no drives are either on the market or are nearing release that even cause the 40MB/sec transfer rate of UW-SCSI to sweat, so introducing new high-bandwidth solutions like Ultra3SCSI and UltraDMA/66 seems unnecessary. Hopefully hard drives will be available in Q1/99 that actually push the theoretical limits of existing interfaces, the 13.3MB/sec. of the Ultrastar 9ES is fast, but nowhere near the 40MB/sec. peak throughput that UW-SCSI can operate at.
· Flawless Operation and Installation
· High Overall Speed and low CPU utilization
· $500 Price still 40% higher than 7200rpm 9.1GB UDMA Drives
· Requires UW-SCSI Controller Card
Overall the 9ES is a seriously fast drive which should be near or at the top of any SCSI-consumer's purchase list.
