  • Galen_of_Edgewood asks: On integrated video, will there be a VIA/GeForce2 chipset?

VIA: I very much doubt it! Our integrated chipset roadmap is based on graphics technology developed by our S3 Graphics Joint Venture. Currently, we offer integrated chipsets featuring the S3 Savage4 core for both the Intel Socket 370 and AMD Socket A platforms with our VIA Apollo PM133 and VIA Apollo KM133 products. We are also developing a number of discrete and integrated mobile solutions that leverage S3's leadership position in that space.

geneh asks: What are your future plans to fix the USB problems VIA has with UCHI?

VIA: As far as I know, most of these issues have already been solved and the fixes have been included in our driver updates.

pablo906 asks: Does VIA plan to offer dual processor support for AMD based systems within the next 3 Quarters? If so has LDT (Lightning Data Transfer) been looked at in these future releases and if so, how will it be implemented?

VIA: We have already announced our support for AMD's LDT bus, now known as the HyperTransport Bus, and are developing a number of products that support this standard. We are looking very closely at enabling multiprocessing support on our Socket A chipsets, but the schedule will very much depend on how soon AMD introduces SMP technology. Their approach is very different than Intel's.

mazdaman asks: On all VIA northbridges, the memory characteristics have one thing in common, they are slow. It appears that the memory interface has not been changed over the various models regardless of memory speed. When will VIA look at this to achieve at least the characteristics of the [very] old BX chipset.

VIA: We have designed our DRAM controller to meet JEDEC's DRAM industry standard timing specs. It is unfair to compare it to an overclocked BX. We work to improve the memory performance of the north bridge with the release of each new chipset. We were the first to implement a high quality PC133 interface on our north bridge and have now integrated DDR266 support to further enhance memory performance.

Galen_of_Edgewood asks: Will the Memory Performance of future VIA chipsets finally be superior to the platforms that Intel has/will release/released?

VIA: We are already delivering strong memory performance with our PC133 and DDR controller designs, and to enhance overall system performance have implemented innovative new technologies such as our new high bandwidth VLink bus between the north and south bridge.
