    MSI 645E Max2-LRU SiS 645DX Motherboard Review
    By Vince Freeman :  May 13, 2002

    SiSoft SANDRA 2002

SiSoft SANDRA is an interesting suite of individual benchmarks and system utilities. The memory bandwidth tests are the most popular section of the SiSoft SANDRA benchmark suite and are the best suited to motherboard performance tests.

Here we see a clear delineation between the three Pentium 4 chipsets. The i850E continues to be the dominant force in SANDRA memory testing, with the 645DX-powered 645E Max2-LRU coming in a close second. The i845D brings up the rear, but still posts some impressive scores which are more than competitive with high-end Athlon XP platforms.

    Hard Drive Performance

Since the ACARD RAID controller chip is still a relative unknown here at SE headquarters, we tested its relative performance against the basic SiS IDE. This is not a RAID performance evaluation, but one of comparing single-disk performance using the two different IDE controllers. This is a far more common use of the technology and we wanted to be sure that performance would not be impacted by going the ACARD ATA-133 route.

As we can see from the benchmark chart, the ACARD controller actually does quite well against the SiS IDE. Performance in PCMark 2002 favors the ACARD, while SiSoft SANDRA scores are almost too close to call. Overall PCMark 2002 and SANDRA 2002 scores are far more dependant on the actual hard drive speed, so pay closer attention to the relative scores between the two IDE options.
