First up (an appetizer) is a set of four close up shots showing off a generic character known as 'Frank'. Look closely at the different types of detail textures on Frank's face. Each of these effects are achievable on today's crop of 3D accelerators. Only the detail texture is being changed, not his face texture.

Paul Butterfield, PR Manager, Monolith Productions explained some of the interesting effects that can be achieved,

"By adjusting the detail texture you can make someone look like a zombie or sun burnt. You can see that we are not changing frank's texture just adding to it for different effects. This will be very helpful on clothes, wall textures.... well ok every texture! You can see how the same texture can be greatly altered by changing the detail texture. This way we don't have to create and load 5 different wood textures, we can just adjust the detail texture in the game. Also this is an engine thing so you don't have to have a G400 to see it. Some people have called this the cheap man's bump mapping."
