To assist readers in getting the whole performance picture at the high-end of the CPU market, we tested various speeds of Coppermine and Katmai CPUs and AMD's Athlon 700:

  • Intel Pentium III 800 (Coppermine, 133MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 733 (Coppermine, 133MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 700 (Coppermine, 133MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 667 (Coppermine, 133MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 650 (Coppermine, 100MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 600E (Coppermine, 100MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 600B (Katmai, 133MHz FSB)
  • Intel Pentium III 600 (Katmai, 100MHz FSB)
  • AMD Athlon 700 (Athlon, 100MHz FSB)

The benchmarks we chose offer both real-world tests as well as tests that tend to isolate the CPU's performance in lieu of the other system peripherals, which is indicative of the processor's raw performance level.

For Coppermine testing at a 133MHz front side bus, we opted to use both a Gigabyte GA-6CX i820 mainboard as well as an Intel VC820 mainboard with 128MB of PC800 RDRAM.

For Katmai, and Coppermine 100MHz front side bus testing, we utilized an MSI MS-6163Pro 440BX mainboard with 128MB of PC-100SDRAM.

The Athlon 700 system was configured with a standard AMD Viper 750 mainboard with 128MB of PC-100 SDRAM along with identical peripherals to the Intel based PCs.
