  • When we first took the Wintec OMEGA Notebook for a test drive back in June, it came with a Pentium II 333MHz, which, at the time, was close to being at the high-end of the scale. Gaming was more than just possible in D3D and coupled with the Rage Mobility 3D accelerator, the machine was the first laptop on which we'd ever been able to play any 3D games properly. The OpenGL scores for Quake 2, however weren't quite high enough to become truly playable at 640x480. But since then, WinTec has slapped in a Pentium II 400MH to rival/match the Del Inspiron 7000 that we reviewed last month.

The Dell Inspiron 7000 with its Pentium II 400MH was not only more capable than the original 333MHz OMEGA in the D3D game department but with its faster processor, the unit dished out enough horse power to gain very respectable scores in Quake 2 OpenGL (high-twenties) when running at 640x480. So what about Wintec's box of tricks? Being less expensive, we were extremely happy when the results obtained rivaled that of the Dell machine. The 640x480 score was in the 30fps range and extremely playable. Half-Life was a tad slower but enjoyable as ever on the road (if a little disturbing for other passengers!).
