  • To compliment the excellent hardware package, ASUS has also included an impressive software lineup to help maximize what the V6600 has to offer.

The SmartDoctor utility is a multifunction application to monitor the temperature and voltage to the AGP card. If it detects that the card is overheating, it will clock the card lower, forcing it to cool down. Another feature unique to the ASUS card is dynamic overclocking, which clocks the card lower when it detects that the extra performance is not needed. These features together allow top-notch performance while lengthening the life of the card. As a tradeoff though, performance can be hampered by protective settings. Luckily, this dynamic overclocking is selectable as an option, one that we don't use for testing.

Another useful tool is ASUS's Live utility, which captures video from camcorders, cameras, laser disk players, and videocassette recorders connected to the video-in port. The only requirement is a Pentium II 266MHz or higher for 30 frames/second capture.

For security purposes ASUS has also included VideoSecurity, which monitors a given area for intruders or environmental changes. If an intruder is detected the program will record the event on camera, e-mail you a notification, make a phone call, or just trigger a sound event. While most people won't use this feature it is definitely useful for those who can take advantage of it.

Video overclocking has rapidly picked up steam, and now it seems as though every new card includes a tweak utility of some sort. The utility bundled with the V6600 is limited to 142MHz core/ 195MHz memory to avoid stability problems, even though the memory could probably go a little higher.
