  • In Quake 3, the increased core and memory clock speed had almost no affect until the maximum overclocked rates were achieved. Even then, the lowest resolution score lost ground by the second increment, as we noticed in the Quake 2 scores, signaling that the next increment would cause failure, as it did. While the 800 x 600 x 32 increase rates were exactly twice the 800 x 600 x 16 Quake 2 increase rates, the 1024 x 768 x 32 scores were only about 79% of the increase rates at that resolution in Quake 2. This may indicate that overclocking not only has a greater impact on performance at higher resolutions but also at higher color depth settings.

From this limited sample, it is very difficult, perhaps even unwise to draw conclusions but it does appear that, to the degree that the board is overclockable, one can anticipate performance increases in framerate for higher resolutions and higher color depth settings. At lower resolutions there seems to be a slight performance decrease as the board approaches its overclocking limitation.
