· Unique "Short-Neck" design saves desktop space
· Above average controls and customizability
· Clarity not as sharp as the Hitachi or ADI monitors
We're getting into the nitty-gritty now, and the PS790 from ViewSonic used innovation and high-quality to vault into 3rd place.
Manufactured from a new type of "short-neck" shadow-mask tube, the 19" PS-790 chops off a full inch from the unit's ass, or "depth" as the techies call it, to fill only a 17" monitor's amount of space.
On desktops where space is limited, the PS-790 is a boon, as it easily fits in places where you wouldn't expect it to. ViewSonic intends to introduce a 21" monitor next year using the new short-neck tube design to lop off two full inches from a typical 21" monitor's ridiculous depth measurement of 20".
In graphical evaluation the PS-790 performed slightly better (see charts) than its Optiquest V95 brother, providing a better platform for gaming and working in general. The PS-790's controls and settings were more detailed than the V95's, offering full control over moire, geometry, tilt, and a host of other adjustments.
The added clarity and design innovation of the PS-790 comes at a cost however, as the it sells for about $50 more than the Optiquest V95 does. Like the V95, the PS-790 comes equipped with a CD-ROM with an up to date driver file for exact tuning.
This is a tasty unit, and a must for those with limited space/resources.
