ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9000 Pro Review

By Vince Freeman June 20, 2003

ATI Technologies is definitely the market leader when it comes to integrated, multimedia video cards. Their All-in-Wonder brand is the gold standard in the industry, and the ability of ATI to produce AiW versions of their highest-end 3D video cards is unprecedented. The All-in-Wonder 9700 Pro is an incredible combination of power and features, and the upcoming All in Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro should be an even wilder ride. This "one card fits all" market strategy has also allowed ATI to hit many different target markets, using the same basic strategy.

The ATI All-in-Wonder line is designed to give an "everything but the kitchen sink" appeal to PC video, while not losing any functionality or gaming performance to the standard video card edition. Key multimedia features include Cable TV, Video-in for editing, TV-out, and DVD playback. The two most important features are obviously the Cable TV and Video-in features, which really differentiate the AiW brand from standard video cards. Watching TV on your computer is something that everyone should try out, and the AiW cards even go further in allowing TV on Demand, Guide+ and timed or manual recording of various TV shows. The Video-in option is also quite popular, especially with the increased prevalence of video cameras and the growth of home video production and straight-to-DVD recordings.

The high-end multimedia segment is well served with the All-in-Wonder Radeon 9700 and 9800 Pro cards, but this ignores potential buyers with a slightly less-than robust budget. To cover off this gap, ATI offers their All-in-Wonder Radeon 9000 Pro, which sports a much lower price tag, but not the expense of multimedia features. While not the gaming powerhouse that the AiW Radeon 9700 or 9800 Pro are, the AiW Radeon 9000 Pro includes many of the same features and hardware as these higher-end models, and for home video and TV tuner use, there's not much separating the various AiW cards.

The main drawing card of the All-in-Wonder Radeon 9000 Pro is its wide range of multimedia features, so our review will cover the TV-tuner functionality and features, Video-in capture and editing and Video-out options, along with some details on 3D game performance.
