XFX GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256-MB Review
    By Vince Freeman :  November 4, 2003

    3D Mark 2003 Performance

The 3DMark 2003 benchmark has seen its fair share of "driver tweaking" controversy, but as long as the mainstream gaming community is using it, we'll present comparison scores. It does offer a view at potential DirectX 9 gaming performance, as well as offering a specific CPU test and a fully-featured Image Quality suite that was lacking in the 2001SE version. These tests have been performed using default settings at 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 resolutions.

The 3DMark 2003 benchmark scores are also about where we expected them, with the XFX GeForce FX 5900 Ultra falling just behind the Radeon 9800 XT, but still ahead of the Radeon 9800 Pro. This is true at both resolutions, and in our first true DirectX 9 benchmark test, the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and the 52.16 driver revision seem to be standing up quite well.

3D Mark 2003 AA and AF Performance

The upgraded detail settings of 4X AA and 8X AF don't affect the XFX GeForce FX 5900 Ultra much at all, and the card's overall score hits the top of the chart. This really doesn't mesh with our previous AA/AF test results, and has us wondering exactly what kind of "optimization" is going on here.

    GunMetal Performance

GunMetal is another DirectX 9 benchmark test, and uses the basic game engine (think Manga-based armor) to really stress a video card's subsystem. This is another very rough game test that uses 2X AA as default, so don't be surprised at the low framerate scores.

The GunMetal benchmark testing once again has the XFX GeForce FX 5900 Ultra out in front, but this is in tune with previous scores. The only difference is in the actual framerates, and the newer 52.16 drivers really extend the overall NVIDIA lead.

The 4X AA and 8X AF detail settings are also in favor of the XFX GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, but to only lose 4 FPS with this kind of extra detail also brings up more than a few questions.
