Not Just a Speed Demon: MSI GeForce3 TI 500 Pro-VTG Review

By Joel Hruska :  January 23, 2002

Quake 3 Arena: 1024x768x32, HQ

CardScore
MSI Pro-VTG176
GeForce3171
RADEON 8500164

In our first Quake 3 Arena test the MSI Pro-VTG leads both the GF3 and the Radeon by a small margin. The fact is, however, as gorgeous a game as Quake 3 can still be at High Quality, the game itself is getting very old. 1024x768xHQ is obviously no longer a powerful enough setting to truly test the performance levels of modern video cards. In order to examine the true potential of each card we'll have to kick the resolution up a few notches.

Quake 3 Arena: 1600x1200, Max Detail

CardScore
MSI Pro-VTG101
GeForce387
RADEON 850098.7

Here we finally see meaningful difference between the three solutions. The reference GF3 falls almost 14% behind the other two cards, while the Radeon 8500 trails 2% behind the MSI Pro-VTG. It's hard to believe that only 18 months ago the highest-end video cards available were only capable of limping along at 15-25 fps at this resolution. For the MSI Pro-VTG to be able to break 100 fps in Q3A at these settings is quite an achievement.
