The ball is definitely in NEC/VideoLogic's court now. After the PCX2 they have a lot of groundwork and catching up to do in terms of beating that 'confidence factor' with gamers and games developers alike. To their credit, they do seem to have gathered support with games developers and some have been vocal about it for example Mark Rein from Epic Megagames and John Heap from Rage Software have both stressed upon the technology's worth. The thing is, by the time PVRSG PC based products come to market in 1999 will us gamers? Still, it would be a shame to see such promising technology end up only on the other end of a console gamepad.
If NEC heaps all its early chips into console while PC accelerator consumers are left with 3Dfx, NVIDIA, S3, ATI(?) & Matrox, and who knows for arcade then so who comes out the winner? The common thread that ties all these technologies together...as usual, the answer is Microsoft. But that's another story.
If I was a fair minded sort, I might say that the console bunnies are entitled to a turn at the "most incredible technology this week" product line but I'm a PC jock and I want my PVRSG unless, of course, it really ain't all that… Overall I'm disappointed at not seeing the PVRSG technology on a PC at this stage and on the console instead. Can't those console folks be contained twiddling their thumbs with a Game Gear or Game Boy?
