Utility Upgrades Target Advanced Users and Small Businesses

Raising the reassurance level for advanced users, small businesses, and large offices, Symantec Corp. has released new Professional Editions of its popular Norton AntiVirus 2002 and Norton Internet Security 2002 packages. The products will ship at the end of this month.

At $70, Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional Edition costs $20 more than its consumer counterpart. It combines the same full-time, automatic protection against virus threats -- including one year's subscription to new virus definitions, automatically downloaded in the background without interrupting work -- with tools to recover accidentally erased files and securely wipe out sensitive or confidential documents.

Besides detecting and removing PC viruses without user intervention, repairing infected files in the background, Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional Edition includes Symantec's AntiVirus 2002 for Palm OS, providing real-time protection to handheld PDA users. Virus definitions are automatically kept up-to-date during HotSync, while an always-resident scanning engine secures Palm data during PC link, infrared, or Internet downloads.

Norton Internet Security 2002 Professional Edition ($100) earns its $30 premium over the standard version with enterprise-strength Norton Intrusion Detection, which guards against both internal and external security breaches and examines the content of Internet traffic to intercept attacks like those caused by the Nimda and Code Red worms. Users are prompted only for attacks that represent a real danger to their systems, with fewer interruptions or false alarms.

The package also installs Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional (including the Palm OS version) and Norton Personal Firewall 2002, letting managers and users block distracting Web sites and banner ads and bar access to specified newsgroups. Administrators can configure firewall and productivity control settings for client systems from one location, while the software automatically detects systems on workgroup networks for addition to the "trusted zone" and changes Internet access profiles as different users log into their Windows XP accounts.
