April Hard Drive Price Guide

This will help provide a snap-shot of the overall market, and follows the same basic pattern as our weekly and monthly price guides. We'll start off with individual price lists for both Parallel and Serial ATA drives, and then by using various sorted lists, move into a more detailed look at overall value and pricing.
The hard drive price lists are not meant to duplicate the vendor selection of online price engines like PriceWatch or PriceGrabber, but instead will present an overview of the PATA and SATA hard drive marketplace. We have included a wide range of desktop hard drives from the most popular manufacturers, as well as ensuring a wide selection of capacities and features.
* Please note that unless otherwise stated (using an Retail designation) the listed hard drives are OEM models.
* All listed hard drives are 7200 RPM, other than (as noted) the 10K WD Raptor models
The Parallel ATA hard drive selection rivals that of SATA, and the market is still quite strong. For standard desktop use, these range from basic 80GB models with 2-MB of cache, all the way up to a monster 400GB and 500GB drives with 8-MB and 16-MB of cache. These are the two extremes, and the most popular models strike a nice balance, usually sitting in the 200GB to 320GB range, and sporting 8MB of internal cache. We've got all the angles covered in our PATA hard drive price list, and along with the usual drive, price and price change columns, we've also included one for $/GB (cost per GB) and model number.
The start of 2006 showed very consistent Parallel ATA drive prices, but since then, things have really been heating up. April has been no different, and we have another seven double-digit price cuts to report, along with virtually no movement at the other end of the chart - the biggest price increase was only $4. The largest price cuts included $20 off the Hitachi 400GB, a $15 cut to the Maxtor DiamondMax 11 400GB, and a $12 drop to the Maxtor DiamondMax 11 500GB drive. The aggregate chart movement matches these figures and showed a $157 overall drop.

Serial ATA may be the interface of today, but SATA II/SATA 3.0 Gb/sec. (S2 in our charts) is the future, and the latest drive models are certainly making use of the new standard. Features such as NCQ and a higher overall data bandwidth really help take some SATA drives to a higher performance plane. For our selected brands and sizes, we've gone the same route as with our PATA list, and included everything from a standard 80GB model, to the top-of-the-line 500GB monstrosities and WD Raptor 10K RPM speed demons. As Serial ATA drives are a newer technology, these are decidedly high-end, even at the entry-level, sporting 8MB of cache and 7200 RPM speeds as the base minimum. Our SATA hard drive price list features entries for drives, prices and price changes, and columns for $/GB (cost per GB) and model number.
Once again, even in the face of significant PATA price movement, the Serial ATA chart still showed a higher overall chart drop, and more individual price cuts. The SATA aggregate chart movement was a very healthy $178 drop, which is a bit less than last month, but still very impressive. The individual cuts were not as deep either, but we still have eight that hit double digits, including the Western Digital 500GB (-$26), Seagate 7200.9 500GB (-$21), and Maxtor DiamondMax 11 500GB (-$14) drives. As with the Parallel ATA chart, there is very little upward price movement, with none hitting double digits, and nothing above $7.

The following chart takes a slightly different angle on Parallel ATA hard drive prices, and attempts to discern overall value using a price per GB figure, and then sorting by it. This chart pushes the lowest $/GB rating to the top, and uses a tried-and-true method of illustrating where the best overall values may exist, Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The Parallel ATA market continues to show consistent trends and the top overall drive value still exist at the 250GB to 320GB level. These drives account for the top eleven PATA values, but we have had a slight changing of the guard at the top of the chart. Due to falling prices, the Western Digital SE 320GB drive loses the top spot to a couple of WD 250GB models, and is being pushed hard by the Samsung 250GB and Seagate 300GB drives. Overall value continues to get better in the PATA market, but only at the 250GB to 320GB range, and we now have eleven PATA drives sitting below the 40-cents per GB barrier, a gain of only one compared to last month. At the bottom of the chart, we find the usual selection of 80GB and 120GB models, along with the expensive Hitachi Deskstar 500GB.

Just as in the previous PATA chart, we are also taking a close look at our Serial ATA drives and determining exactly which models and capacities offer the best overall value. We do this through the tried-and-true method of determining hard drive value, or "price per GB", which is then used as a sorting criteria to ensure the best $/GB deals rise to the top. Of course, no method is foolproof, and other factors like performance or features certainly come into play, but it does give us a different view on which brands, speeds and capacities offer the best bang for the buck.
The Serial ATA value chart shows the same basic trends as we found with PATA hard drives, with the 250GB to 320GB range offering the best overall value, and making it the place to get the best bang for your buck. This range also encompasses the top thirteen SATA drives, which is a repeat for the third month in a row. The Samsung SpinPoint 250GB takes over the top spot, followed by the Seagate 7200.9 250GB, Western Digital 320GB, Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB, and last month's leader, the Maxtor 250GB, in fifth spot. We also have twelve SATA drives sitting below the 40-cents per GB level, a gain of three since March, Naturally, the Western Digital Raptor drives are in their usual position at the bottom of the chart, as this line of high-end 10K RPM drives has always been about pure performance and quality, not value.

Parallel and Serial ATA Hard Drives: Price Changes
The following chart takes all of the tracked PATA and SATA hard drives, and incorporates these into one monster price list, which is then sorted by the monthly price change. This gives us a slightly different view than in previous hard drive price lists, as it identifies the month's biggest movers and shakers, and can really help identify the areas to take advantage of. When used with the other price charts, this list can add another dimension to the monthly prices, but keep in mind that the largest cuts may not always translate into the best overall deal. We have also gotten rid of the $/GB column and replaced it with a SATA/PATA section to ensure there is no confusion about the interface of any drive models.
The overall price change list highlights the individual price cuts and spikes, as well as offering a direct comparison between the PATA and SATA hard drives. April's results are similar to what we saw in March in terms of overall chart drops, but we don't see the same deep individual cuts of a month ago. In terms of the PATA vs. SATA comparison, we see a repeat of last month, with Serial ATA and Parallel ATA hard drives each holding down five of the top ten spots. The top two price cuts did belong to Serial ATA models, but again, there is not the same disparity as in March. This does mirror the results we found in the individual hard drive charts, with the SATA models posting the largest individual cuts, and holding a slight advantage in terms of total chart movement.

It's a very extensive list, which gives you all the important price data, and can be a valuable shopping tool for those on limited budgets. This also gives us another way to view the data, and determine how each drive stacks up in terms of price, and then ensuring you make the best use of your gaming system dollar. As with the previous chart, we have replaced the $/GB figure with a SATA/PATA column to ensure there is no confusion about the interface of any drive models.
The overall price chart gives another view of the overall hard drive market, and while we don't see anything new in terms of pricing, this does make the individual "value points" much more obvious. The type of chart can also come in handy when pricing out your budget for a new system or upgrade buy, and determining exactly which hard drives are in the same basic price range. This level of price sorting also allows you to play with your budget and performance requirements a little, mixing and matching hard drives with other components, until you come up with the perfect combination.
