Upon receiving the eval unit from MidiLand, we unpacked the 7100's various self-contained boxes and examined their contents.
Right away we noticed the weight of the magnets within the satellites, they're quite heavy. Figure about twice the weight and approximately 25% larger in overall size than the small Cambridge Soundworks satellites that so many of us have used over the past few years.
The S4 7100 includes five of these...
The five satellites are identical in size and appearance, and offer users a choice of two mounting angles on flush surfaces thanks to their ellipsoidal design. Place the satellite on its top, and it points upward at a 15-degree angle. Place the satellite on its bottom, and it now points upward at a steeper 25-degree angle.
Either way looks the same cosmetically, as MidiLand has smartly positioned S4 logo stickers on both the top and bottom of each speaker, so as not to offend any perfectionist owners with any bizarre-looking upside down graphics.
If the user chooses to wall or ceiling mount the 7100's satellite speakers, say, for use with a home theater, they may do so via optional screw-based brackets that can be connected to each satellite.
The powered subwoofer, which houses the 7100's 100Watt amplifier, is constructed of wood and is also heavier than the subwoofers we've seen from competitors in this price range.
100Watt Subwoofer/Amplifier.
Size-wise the subwoofer resembles a PC mini-ATX tower case, as its height reaches 13 inches and its width measures a little over 8". From front to back, the powered subwoofer is 12" in depth.
A plastic front face, which integrates a fabric protector along with a green LED that glows when the unit is turned on rounds out the aesthetics of the subwoofer.
